COMPOSITION OF EXPENDITURES OF CELAL BAYAR UNIVERSITY KOPRUBASI VOCATIONAL COLLEGE STUDENTS AND ITS PLACE IN LOCAL ECONOMY

Summary/Abstract: In addition to their scientific activities, universities are important scientific institutions that affect the economic, social, political and cultural structures of their environment. In our country, taking into consideration the local and regional economic effects of universities in particular, a higher education policy is being impelemented which involves establishment of at least one state university in all provincial centres and one vocational college in every district. Student expenditures occupy an important place among local economic contributions made by universities. This paper examines the contribution of the university in district economy made by expenditures of students at the vocational college in Köprübaşı district of Manisa. In addition, the shares of the expenditure groups of the students in expenditure budgets of students are also determined. The data of this paper are collected from a survey applied on students. The first three ranks of expenditure items of students are represented by accomodaiton, catering and communication-transportation. Differenration is witnessed in total per-capita expenditure and the share of expenditure groups in the total edepending on gender. The most important differentiation according to gender among expenditure groups is in personal care, accommodation and catering groups. Female students spend almost twice compared to male students for personal care.
