Summary/Abstract: This paper tries to determine basic points towards life that are fundaments of standpoints in bioethics. So called “bio-protectionism” (life is perceived as something that must be protected at all costs) is set as a main point of most bioethical positions. However, the author is trying to show that there is another point that is not acknowledged and not so much thought about in contemporary bioethics – that is so called “bio-criticism”. By taking this standpoint the phenomenon of life is questioned, it is not something self-explanatory anymore. Reasons for its gradual decay are not sought exclusively in external sources, but in itself. The author recognizes this standpoint, I certain features, in the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and his followers, even though it is not fully terminologically elaborated here. Complementing the term bioethics with bio-criticism is set as a task of integrative bioethics. That will remove one shortcoming of past bioethics that mostly ignored a bio-critical standpoint as a potential manner of handling life.
