Summary/Abstract: The article studies the official Church-law Collection in Bulgaria in the beginning of the tenth century entitled Sintagma Canonicos (Syntagma of 14 titles without commentaries) and more precisely its earliest copy – the one of the twelfth century – containing the note of the Russian copyist Ephraim (GIM, Moscow, Syn 227). Although the Old Bulgarian protograph has not reached our times it can be argued that separate texts of Ephraim’s copy provide information on concepts and realia related to everyday life in medieval Bulgaria. The etymological and cultural analysis focuses on several lexemes such as „сига, лек, къщник, лисктвеник, козлогласование” considered relics from ancient pagan rituals concerning playing dice, mime performances, as well as ritual entertainment. A connection has been sought with Bulgarian folklore which has preserved until nowadays some similar rituals, as for example mummery games.
