Süleyman Demirel’s Role in Turkey’s Central Asia Policy

Summary/Abstract: In the Aftermath of the Soviet Union Turkey started to interest in the newly independent Turkic Republics in 1991 and she was forced to pursue a foreign policy towards Central Asia. Despite her economic and political problems Turkey has maintained close ties to the Central Asian states in the economic, cultural and political fields. Within this context this paper’s aim is to explore the Turkish-Central Asian relations in above mentioned fields with regard of Demirel’s role in bilateral relations between Turkey and Central Asian countries. For this purpose the newspaper articles were used to analyse the bilateral relations and due to the content analysis of Demirel’s speeches the Turkey’s Central Asia policy will be explained.
