Summary/Abstract: Smart materials are new materials which will change the structure of building claddings and their operation in a revolutionary way. They are made in numerous laboratories around the world and in various areas; a smaller number of them are already applicable in architectural and technological design. Smart materials are responsive to external stimuli in a manner which significantly changes their properties. These responses to external stimuli are fast, predictable and planned, and are usually reversible. The changes undergone by materials vary – materials change their properties (e.g. colour, physical state, electrical conductivity, viscosity, transparency etc.) or energy (emit light, convert solar energy into electrical energy, electrical energy into mechanical one etc.) The article presents three kinds of smart material and their applications in architecture.
