Summary/Abstract: The present paper analyzes the presumptions and conditions of the rise of the first definition of philosophy in the Slav language. The Author exhibits the philosophical profile of St. Constantine – Cyril, who is considered to be the author of the definition in question. According to it „philosophy is the comprehension of God’s and men’s matters, insofar as man can approach God by his deeds”. The Author of the present text maintains that the definition of philosophy by St. Constantine – Cyril contains two semantic areas. The first area reflects the influence of Plato’s doctrine, and the second one is inspired by the Stoics. The Author claims that, while preparing his definition of philosophy, St. Constantine recognized that it had to embrace the influence of both Plato’s doctrine and the Stoics. He however took in consideration the theological and philosophical thought of St. Gregory of Nice and St. Aurelius Augustinus.
