Summary/Abstract: The history of literature, fine arts, music and cinema is marked by events that have provoked public anger and indignation but also have awakened the masses and made them realize that a new era had begun. The rhetoric of art’s integration has diversified to the point that scandalous provocation has become a common category of aesthetics. “Quel scandale!”, collection of essays compiled by Marie Dollé, presents variety of stories about scandals so famous that they have become true legends: the first performances of “Hernani”, “The Rite of spring” and “Pelleas and Melisande”, the premieres of “L’Âge d’or” and “salò, or the 120 Days of sodom”. The book discusses the essence of a unique phenomenon whose collective reach goes beyond the single field of aesthetics. The first chapter “The scandal – script and legends” proposes an analysis of the media orchestration of the scandal as part of the process that allows the future acceptance of the artwork. The second chapter “images of scandal” explores some of the ingenious methods used by artists to create a public scandal. The next part “notes on a scandal” focuses on two major works in 20th century music repertoire viewed through the lens of scandal because of their controversial reception that contributes to their glory even nowadays. The last part clearly sets the question “Can art still scandalize us today?” The collection of articles looks at different aspects of the scandal which has revealed throughout history to be a substantial part of the aesthetic creation. It reminds us that our cultural heritage is built thanks to the audacity of certain number of cre- ators whose actions have proven Elie Faure’s words: “The revolutionary of today is the classic of tomorrow.” This book opens up the possibility of a theoretical discussions on the concept of scandal that more recent publications come to fill out.
