Summary/Abstract: The article makes a survey of some works from the last century, which display views on the stylistic peculiarities of the folk song from the Rhodope Mountains. Each of these works reflects a certain stage from the development of Bulgarian musical Folkloristics. A common feature of these works is the comparison between the songs of Bulgarian Muslims and those of Bulgarian Christians, which leads to the idea of the common origin of vocal music in the Rhodopes. Attention is paid to the ornamentics as a variant-generating feature and style-defining factor. Another important factor for the song-performing style on regional and local level is sound-formation. In connection with the Rhodopean ornamentics the author brings up the question for the origin of ornamentics in general - a question, which still remains open.
