Summary/Abstract: This article presents the lamentations of Vlachs, Turks, Jews, Gagaouzes, Greeks and Gypsies in comparison with the lamentation tradition of the Bulgarians from the corresponding region of the country. The authors describe the funeral and memorial practices of each group, the prohibitions and the specific actions in different moments of the ritual. The musical analysis of the lamentations aims at defining the characteristic melodic features of each lamentation style. Special attention is paid to the correlation between recitativo and cantillena in structuring the melody. In conclusion the authors ascertain the similarity of the funeral rituals and lamentations of the different groups as a proof for the unity of folklore culture. This confirms the statement, that musical folklore may be considered as an indicator of genetic community and language.
