Summary/Abstract: Alongside with the introduction of new laws that were meant to transform the economy, the educational system and the political stage in general, the Romanian Communist Party (RCP) initiated a purge against its political allies and against its own members as well. This wave of purges and arrests affected in a great deal the political organizations of the ethnic minorities, including the Hungarian Popular Union (HPU) from 1948 onwards. Beginning with 1949 members and people connected with the HPU are arrested. During this first stage of arrests the communists concentrated on members from the centre movement of the HPU, namely Balogh Edgár, Demeter János, Csőgör Lajos and Jordáky Lajos. They were accused of high treason, espionage, nationalism and of belonging to the Right. Most of the above mentioned were arrested in 1952, except Csőgör whom they had arrested in 1949. The sentences were passed on 8th May 1954. In general they were sentenced to 6-12 years of imprisonment and they were also deprived of their civil rights for 4 to 5 years, not to mention that all their property was confiscated. Beyond the fact that the trials of Csőgör, Jordáky, Balogh and Demeter were show trials, they had double, national and regional (ethnic), implications. From this point of view the trials mark the end of the HPU and of the adjacent Hungarian cultural and scientific institutions in Transylvania.
