Summary/Abstract: On the basis of the data provided by Gábor Patyi, who published a book containing the list of students originating from the former Hungary, who studied between 1890 and 1918 at the higher education institutes in Vienna, the author of this article makes a historical-statistical study concerning the students of Transylvanian origin. From the total number of 1725 new registered Transylvanians most attended the courses taught at the University (862), the Theresian Military Academy (357), and the Polytechnic (183). Every year there were in-matriculated 50-70 Transylvanians, the calculated average reaching 60 students. Considerations regarding their confessional affiliation, showed that 34% were Lutherans, 33% Romano-Catholics, 12% Orthodox, 10% Israelites, 7% Greek-Catholics, 5% Reformats, 0,5% Unitarians, while 0,1% had no religious references. The mother tongue of 47% of the students was German, 33% Hungarian, 18% Romanian, 0, 5% or less Serbian, Polish, Croat, and Greek, respectively. The fathers of 20% of the students were teachers, lawyers or intellectuals, of 15% military officers, of 12% land officers, of 9% industrials, of 7% ecclesiastical persons (for the rest, see table 6). Most of the students were born in the administrative units of the Banat and the former Saxon’s Land. From the 340 cases, when data referring to the preliminary university studies were available, one can find out that most of the students came from Budapest (129), Cluj (89) and from universities of the Habsburg Empire and Germany. Most of the students made their medium-level studies in the military schools of Austro-Hungary and in the gymnasiums from the former Saxon’s Land.
