Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present article is to study the representations of illness, as an integral part of the human condition, in selected Romanian novels written in the interwar period. We focus on the image of illness in the works of Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu and Max Blecher, analysing the ways in which illness is perceived by the protagonists, as well as its influence on their lives and mentality. In spite of the fact that they adopt different attitudes towards illness, from refusal and dissimulation to its acceptance as an existential experience, in all cases illness leads to irreversible changes in their lives.
