Some Translation Difficulties of the novel EXUVII by Simona Popescu

Summary/Abstract: The present article discusses the most important problems that occurred in Polish translation of Simona Popescu’s novel Exuvii. The majority of the difficulties concern the language of the novel, which is very poetic, enigmatic. The author plays with language, creates numerous neologisms, associates words in an original way. Moreover, she uses specialised, scientific vocabulary from different domains (medicine, biology, chemistry, philosophy, mythology, etc.). The novel abounds with the examples of wordplay, which are often difficult or impossible to translate. Besides, the text contains numerous quotations from the works of other writers and poets, often without titles, or even the names of the authors, which caused some problems in the case of sources other than Romanian.
