Summary/Abstract: The article treats of some aspects of Uniate Cardinal Bessarion's (1403-1472) life and deeds in Italy. The author dwells on the Cardinal's patronage and services in the reorganization of the university centre in Bologna, the activities of his Humanistic Academy in Tuscolo and his fundamental philosophical work In calumniatorem Plathonis, as well as on "Donatio Bessarioni" (Bessarion's Donation) - the collection of manuscripts the Cardinal gave as a present to the Venetian Republic that formed the basis of the famous Biblioteca Marciana. Special attention is dedicated to the letter accompanying the donation to Venice and to its role in the cultural life of the republic. In an appendix the translation of the letter from an incunabular edition, kept at the "St Cyril and Methodius" National Library, is presented.
