Summary/Abstract: This article treats an initial stage in international strategies for European co-operation of the League of Nations, aimed at overcoming the mass stereotypes which connected the solution of inter-state and ethnic conflicts with confrontation, violence and war. Considerable attention was paid to historical education in building a common European spirit of tolerance and respect of human rights. What was tolerated in this field were approaches which rejected conflict and ethnocentrism and led to understanding the role of cultural influences and the interdependence of the nations on the road to the prosperity of mankind. The article outlines the role of non-governmental organisation in the educational strategy of the League of Nations. The practice of the 1920s is considered politically doomed, but also as a beginning which found its positive development under the aegis of UNESCO after the 1970s. The ideas of the League of Nations are topical today too, when international initiatives in education are once again trying to achieve tolerance and non-violence in human coexistence.
