Summary/Abstract: In the article the analysis of the nouns of material singularia tantum is given in the light of the grammatical category of number in the Polish and Ukrainian languages. Semantic groups of nouns that belong to the nouns of material are distinguished. Methods are analysed and the difference in the recording of the nouns singularia tantum in the dictionaries of the Polish and Ukrainian languages is shown. Meanings that these nouns get when used in the plural are investigated. Plural forms of the nouns of material singularia tantum in the both languages may mean: ‘item’, ‘portion, ‘variety’, ‘great number’. In the Ukrainian language these nouns may have the meaning ‘area filled with certain material’. The meanings of plural forms of some nouns are recorded in dictionaries, however the dictionaries of the both languages do not record the meanings ‘variety’ and ‘great number’. Plural forms of the nouns of material singularia tantum are used, as a rule, in the texts of scientific and fiction literature, spoken language, can be of expressive character.
