Summary/Abstract: The text examines the problems connected with the breaking up of the historical periods that are vital for the cultural history of Bulgaria and more specifically those of the theater from the middle of the 19th century till the present days. Defined are the important years 1878, 1918, 1944 (1945), 1968 and 1989. The aim is to suggest a division which has the advantage to include years that are important also of the European history (even 1878 was internationally acknowledged as the year when a new European state emerged). The article offers arguments for the breaking up of the historical periods. They are based on the radical changes in the collective consciousness – a specific year becomes objective fact when it is accepted as a moment following which irreversible changes take place. At the same time the author subjects to criticism arbitrary division of historical periods when this impedes the overall spirit of a given epoch. The main appeal is to come out of the dominant notion about an uninterrupted cultural tradition subjected vertically to historical time and underestimating the horizontal dependency of the artifact from the social status quo. The continuity (in drama, acting, etc.) should be envisaged not as an elementary transfer of models, practices and conventions but as their recycling in the following social-political formation with new aims in completely different conditions.
