Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to reconstruct the cosmological status of saints in Bulgarian popular religion on the basis of the usage of the term living saint in folk discourses. The term is used as a title of both canonized saints and of local religious specialists, such as healers and clairvoyants, to designate an open group of numinous communal helpers who have established their superior efficacy through continuous successful service in their hagiolatric communities. The two components of the term in their metaphorical juxtaposition reveal not only the functional characteristics of the living saints of being active communal helpers, but also their liminal existential status that predetermines their miraculous abilities.
