Summary/Abstract: The study is meant to propose a comparative approach between Luigi Pirandello’s characters (Mattia Pascal, the six characters searching for an author) and the postmodern dispersive interiority enacted in Paul Auster’s narrative. The arguments take into account both the thematic coincidences, (the existence as a perpetual metamorphosis of the surface, the inner world as simulacrum) and the stylistic techniques that aim to create a continuum between the world of the reader and the different levels of the textual reality (metalepsis, trompe l’oeil).
