Summary/Abstract: Establishing the vulgar tongue as the foundation of literary Bulgarian language began in the first half of the 19th century. It was a result of the effect of a number of extra-linguistic and linguistic factors, but cannot be separated from the growing interest in folklore. This lasting interest was connected with the triumph of the New Bulgarian line in building up the literary language in the second quarter of the 19th century. Vasil Aprilov and Ivan Bogorov, the most outstanding adherents of this line at that time, also collected and published folk-songs. Collecting folklore and writing in the language spoken by the people were combined and mutually conditioned also in men of letters like Nayden Gerov, Dobri Chintulov and Petko Slaveykov. The idea of including features of more of the dialects in the literary language, which appeared in the 40s and 50s of the last century, was also connected with observations on the language of folk-songs.
