Summary/Abstract: On the basis of data from two sociological research projects is revealed the hierarchical model of women's motivation to start business of their own as a form of alternative occupation. The clash between their expectations and the objective reality is shown. The article throws some light upon the socio-demographic and the personal psychological characteristics of Bulgarian 'business' women, which influence their, more or less, successful start in the private sector. The portrait of women's enterprise and its specificity in Bulgaria is delineated. A special stress has been laid upon the factors, predetermining the lack of equality between women and men in the private business sector; on the major problems of the, so called, "women's" business and on the perspectives for solving those problems.
