Summary/Abstract: The high fertility of the youngest mothers in Bulgaria (aged 13-19), as well as of those aged 18-19, still represents a serious demographic and medico-social problem of our country at the close of XX c. The research carried out, aims at throwing some light upon the changes in the dynamics of early fertility in the last 10 years under the complex influence of demographic, economic and cultural factors. The retrospective analysis of fertility according to age covers the period 1960-1998. The prospective typological medico-social survey of young mothers and of their children, has been carried out by means of standard interview and covers two family-planning clinics and three delivery wards in the regional hospitals in 1999. In the article are analyzed the data taken from the University Clinic — Pleven. The early fertility is viewed with respect to the following characteristics of the mother — age, residence, ethnic origin, family status, education, social group, income, number of pregnancies, of child-bearings and of abortions. Taken into account is also the mother's awareness of different contraceptives and the way they are applied. The children of young mothers are analyzed by sex, weight at birth and residence.
