Health condition and sexual behavior of the youngest mothers

Summary/Abstract: The article is part of a study on the early births in Bulgaria. Young mothers (up to 19 years of age) who have given births at typologically chosen Obstetrics hospitals during the last quarters of 1993 and 1999 were included in interview. The number of women included is 987. The health characteristics of the women studied include demographic, ethnic-cultural, and social-economic factors, life style and risk factors. Age of first menstruation, physiological development of the pregnant woman, morbidity before and during the pregnancy, and birth giving have been analyzed. A special focus has been given on the risk of early sexual activity, on the lack of knowledge and use of modern contraceptive methods and remedies, which have resulted in early pregnancies and childbirth.
