Summary/Abstract: Athenaeus of Naucratis, when quoting Eubulus’ words, was himself deeply convinced that the absence of fish food in Homer’s epics was the poet’s deliberate choice. The episodic mentions of fish in the Iliad and the Odyssey greatly puzzled ancient commentators, as indeed it puzzles scholars today. Both groups attempted to find a solution to this riddle, while at the same time being unanimous in at least one aspect: the lack of fish in Homer’s works was by no means accidental.
