Summary/Abstract: The authors present the outline of the beginnings and the development of film studies as a new scientific discipline in Poland, and the shaping of film theory and history in the communist Poland (Polish People’s Republic or PRL) during two separate periods: 1945-1956 and 1956-1990. Since – with regard to the reflection on film – it is hard to separate the critique from theory, the authors use the term film thought. New aesthetic thought appeared in the post-war film critique, along with the continuation of the pre-war tradition, however this process was halted by the doctrine of Socialist Realism.
