Summary/Abstract: University students are among the most intensive users of the Internet and new media. Surfing the Internet brings a number of psychological and social consequences. In our article we introduce the concept of problematic Internet use leading to an Internet addiction. Our research was focused on describing how young people use the Internet at universities (N = 460) and on the possible link between the selected communication preferences and the problematic Internet use that leads to Internet addiction. The results shows a high average time spent on the Internet. 4 % – 9 % of our sample shows a significant problem with overuse of the Internet.
