Summary/Abstract: A leading figure in the historiography and ethnography of late 19th century - early 20th century Austria, professor at Czernowitz University, Dr. Raimund Friedrich Kaindl (1866-1930) was one of the leading scholars generously produced by Bukovina. After more than four decades of laborious scientific and cultural activity, Kaindl left a considerable historical and ethnographic work about the history of Bukovina, with its multitude of ethnic groups, focusing especially on the German population that lived for centuries within the geographical area of the Carpathians, whose history he presented in three volumes entitled: Geschichte der Deutschen in den Karpathenländer. At the outbreak of World War I, when the Russian armies occupied Czernowitz, Kaindl took refuge, passing through Romania, in Vienna. As proved by a number of unpublished documents from the archives of Vienna, in the summer of 1915, following the proposal of the Minister of Cults and Education, Max Hussarek, the Emperor Franz Joseph, taking into consideration the specialization, as well as the prodigious scientific and teaching activities conducted by Kaindl at Czernowitz University, decided to appoint him as titular professor for the course of history of the Austrian Empire at Graz University, starting October 1, 1915, for the chair vacant for more than a year following the death of Professor Karl Uhlirz. This ended Kaindl’s activity at Czernowitz University and his connection with native Bukovina and its history.
