Summary/Abstract: The paper emphasizes the importance of human resources for non-governmental organizations (NGOs). It reflects findings of two research projects carried out by the author since 2004. The first part of the paper presents an analysis of human resources available to Polish NGOs and refers to their dynamic growth in recent years. A comparison to the situation of German and British NGOs is included. The results of a study on students’ awareness of the non-governmental sector are highlighted subsequently with close attention paid to the attractiveness of that sector as an employer. The paper is concluded with the presentation of methods which enable to quantify and valuate human capital in non-commercial environment, including ratios used to monitor development of that capital.
