Summary/Abstract: The article is focused on the anthroponymical bases of by-names of the old-time inhabitants of the Kielce district (Poland). The research material comes from the church archives (registers of births, marriages and deaths) of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Two kinds of names are analysed: 1) names based on the Old Polish compound personal names and 2) derivatives from compound forenames. Nominal names of diminutive structure (having patronymic function in the old years), are typical of the Kielce district. The formal instability of personal names starts to disappear on the turn of the 17th century. Then the stabilised form of the name refers to all members of the family and becomes a constant, hereditary and conventional surname.
