Summary/Abstract: As a part of pastoral theology, homiletics deals with the interpretation of the Holy Scripture, the relation between god’s Word and human word. The gospel needs to become a personal insight and only then preached to modern people. Church teaching stresses the importance of homiletics in pastoral care. After the restoration of Lithuanian State Independence, the Catholic Church in Lithuania obtained extensive possibilities for pastoral care at universities. The object of the article: relations of homiletics with higher education. The aim of the article: to identify the importance of homiletics as a pastoral subject in universities. The tasks: 1. to evaluate Catholic realities in higher education, 2. to show the importance of Church teaching in the service of god’s Word, 3. to set the goals for homiletics in higher education. The chosen methods: scientific analysis and synthesis of Church documents. The work describes homiletics in theological perspective, traditional and modern forms of preaching. God’s Word is discussed, and the history of Catholic education in Lithuania is analyzed. The spread of spirituality and the apostolate of intellectuals in universities has been taken into account and the place of homiletics discussed. The conclusions: 1. The mission of the Church – to preach the gospel to everybody, in new and modern forms, finding a response in the listener of a certain time and culture. 2. The inculturation of faith at universities - as a pastoral mission of the Church, using different theoretical and practical methods of homiletics based on theological principles and transforming cultural values into Christian practices at universities.
