Summary/Abstract: As service-learning, citizenship education and even work-linked training are only rarely mentioned in the literature on Hungarian higher education, we studied phenomena which either favour or hinder the introduction of service learning to Hungarian higher education. We outline these changes, also quoting the rare references to service learning and citizenship education in the literature. The main developments are the changing socio-economic and cultural environment of Hungarian higher-education, the growing importance of volunteering and civil initiatives of students, the new educational programs (mainly in the social services and educational sector) and new methods of teaching (e.g. problem-based learning, experiential learning, reflective learning, mentoring pedagogy, etc.) which either promote new types of connection between higher education and its social partners or provide possibilities for students to experience service-learning.
