Summary/Abstract: The production of traditional handicrafts, distributed mainly as a tourist art, attracts the consumers’ interest by the products’ “authenticity“. Recent surveys show that the authenticity is the most common indication of the demand of these products. Evaluation of the objects as authentic is a measure for their quality. How the “authenticity” is a category proper to or describing products of traditional culture and their modern versions, are there any temporal and spatial dimensions beyond traditional culture, is the notion a result of social construction, is it a subject of an objective evaluation or it generate subjectively when in touch with particular culture, is the “authentic” reduced when production is going away from the original, what is the role of the handicrafts market etc. — these and many others are the questions continue to attract the attention of the researchers. In time of globalization of cultures, the debate about authenticity has a special place in demand and display of identity. Today, production of handicrafts tries to follow the models of traditional culture, but in accordance with the market demand of tourist art. This study reveals the place of “authenticity” in products on offer.
