Summary/Abstract: The author of the article maintains that the notion of parentheses, which is found in linguistic literature, is not precise, defined contradictory and 'lost' among utterance, text and discourse. Parenthesis is an exceptional phenomenon of text as written language variety, one of the communication forms between an author/narrator and a potential reader. Parenthesis explicates the author's discourse in text and helps the reader to recognise and differentiate between objective and subjective narration. It presupposes two modality layers in discourse. At the same time parenthesis can be treated not only as stylistic and compositional element of text, but as well as one of the ways to express both the meaning in text and the author's intentions.
