Summary/Abstract: The present article presents a theoretical overview of the interpretation on church state relationship in communist Romania. It offers a possible solution to researching this topic by going comparative and using the case of Soviet Union as example. Several ways of interpreting this relationship are followed and some of the pitfalls of such research are discussed. The terms that were used to define the relationship between church and state during the communist regime: compromise, submission, co-option and association are discussed in an effort to deconstruct a narrative that tends to generalize and think in clusters this meet between orthodoxy and the state.
