Summary/Abstract: There are many written records, preserved up to now on the territory of the ex-Ottoman Empire, which provide us with information about Turkish popular culture. However, one phenomenon of popular culture stands out among the manuscript sources for Turkish culture. These are hand-written notebooks, which represent a specific form of collective memory and have their definite function and place in the context of the cultural development of the Turkish people. There we can find texts with literary contents, prayers, medicine prescriptions, magic formulas, even drawings. These manuscripts, called cönk, could be defined as the most precious and reliable sources, revealing the face of Turkish popular culture from this period.
