Summary/Abstract: Muslims today cannot speak of great successes in science, culture or civilisation in general. This is particularly important in light of their rich cultural past. Since Islam was the main factor of progress of the Islamic civilisation, it does not seem justified to blame that same religion as the cause of civilizational decadence of the Islamic ummah. Analysing the causes of the current situation, the author investigates the viewpoints of several Muslim thinkers of Shia provenance, arriving to the conclusion that indicates that religious scholars and their irrational interpretation of faith, political power-holders and rulers, with their tyranny and suffocation of free thought, on one hand, and colonialists on the other, were and continue to be the principal factors of scientific and civilizational backwardness of Muslims. The Islamic world needs a rational interpretation of faith, an interpretation that would answer the questions asked by new generations, and contribute to the transformation of authoritarian political systems into democracies. Thus, by relying on the immense potential of the Islamic ummah, losses could be compensated and a state of backwardness and passivity in relation to the prevailing processes of civilisation could be overcome. Muslims would thus be able to defend their material and spiritual riches from the attacks by cultural and civilizational imperialism of the modern world.
