Summary/Abstract: The influence of the Orthodox churches on state and nation building pro¬cesses in post-1989 Europe remains an important research topic which is still under theorized.1 Especially after the collapse of the Communist regimes, the increased role of the Orthodox churches in shaping the polity of the new na-tional states has moved from the realm of the private into the political and should thus not only concern theological researchers but also historians and political scientists.
