The 2004 European Union Expansion

Summary/Abstract: In the past fifty years when European Community had become European Union the integration process consisted of five enlargement stages. During the previous extensions only democratic western countries reached the EU but the last enlargement decision has pushed the borders of Union until the ex-soviet area in the immediate neighborhood of Russia. Facing this new type of challenges, the EU enlargement file has to give a careful examination, to stressing and keeping in public attention the institutional mechanisms and the political and strategic implications of the new enlargement process and the capacity of EU to assume them.
