Summary/Abstract: This article is about the corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a concept and as a phenomenon on the free market. It is analyzed in the context of a „place“ where the philanthropy of business and the pragmatism of ethics „meet“. It shows that it is not meaningless to link business with philanthropy (as its free voluntary choice) and ethics – with pragmatism (as business ethics is an applied ethics). For better understanding and reasoning of CSR a special attention is given to the evolution of the idea of the responsibility of business, the contemporary understanding of it, and the Pyramid of CSR as Archie Carroll’s contribution to it. Tracking the process why and how this concept is imposed on the market it reveals its features, expectations, challenges.
