Summary/Abstract: After the 1989 Revolution, political action became an emergency. Potential political players, inhibited bu the communist blockage, suddenly found themselves inot a political ground characterized by an explosive freedom. After 1989, Romania witnessed the sudden appearance of more then 150 political parties. Political pluralism principle became consecrated, too. Typically for Romania, as soon as the Ceausescu regime fell down, three „historical” parties were resurected, dominating the inter-war political life: The National Peasants’ Christian – Democratic Party, The National Liberal Party and the Social-Democratic party. Yet, the Revolution did not find any ideologically and politically prepared groups to become active players in the construction of a new system. The truth is that the only ones to have the capacity to organize themselves and to communicate with the population by means of the television were those who were part of the group of power surrounding Ion Iliescu, therefore the National Salvation Body is the one to have managed to coagulate the huge masses around itself. Another peculiarity for Romania, but also for the whole Eastern Europe, is the fact that there was no time to gradually develop the party system. Trying to re-make the inter-war multi-partism, the new Romanian political parties did not consider too much the pre-existing social differences, their members’ first choice being the ideological or traditional criteria.
