Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the question of the performing styles, characteristic for some kins of singers in the Rhodope Mountains. A basic component of this style is the ornamentation and the manner in which it is performed by separate representatives of these kins. The characteristic features of the kin’s style are defined by the way of structuring the ornaments, by the rhythmical characteristics and by the use of different effect – outcries, glissando, etc. Very important is the phenomenon of ornamentation on secondary level, “ornamentation within the ornamentation”, which refers to the ornamentation not only in the Rhodope Mountains, but also in other folklore regions of Bulgaria. The author also tackles the issue of singing among Bulgarian Christians and Bulgarian Muslims (pomaks), their manner and their style differences. In the present an interesting inversion in the two styles is observed, especially in cases of professional performance. For example, the most popular singer in the Rhodopes, Radka Kushleva, is from a Christian family, but she uses repertory and manner of singing, which are characteristic of the pomaks. On the other hand, another famous singer, Valya Balkanska, who is a pomak, sings in a manner, typical for Bulgarian Christian women.
