Summary/Abstract: The article deals with processes of transformation, which take place in the settlement dancing culture in the 30s of the 20th century: the penetration of forms from the urban type of culture and the gradual shifting of tradition towards the scene. Substantial changes occur after 1944 during the socialist period and later in the period of transition after 1989. The concrete object of research is the dancing culture of the village of Gorni Bogrov, Sofia region. The transformations in different spheres of the traditional dancing culture in the settlement develop dynamically and with different intensity in the three periods, mentioned above. The main role in the processes of change belongs to the institutionalization of dancing activity through the school, the community center (chitalishte) and the amateur art activities. The author examines the development of the interactions between traditional and institutionalized dancing activity. She follows the dynamics of the dancing process in the different generations, the motivation for dancing, group and personal interpretations of the dance. While commenting on the processes of transformation in the settlement dancing culture, the author suggests a new model of experiencing and evaluating the dance and the dancing event. She presents her conclusions from the analyses on the dancing behavior of separate bearers of the culture, outlining the general tendencies in the penetration of each new dancing activity. The phenomenon of “amateur art activities” is observed in regards with its role in two main types of processes: the presentation of the traditional on the stage and the penetration of the fashionable. Despite of transformations, the dancing cultural phenomenon shows continuous vitality in the settlement folklore culture. The impulse for dancing as for a necessary human activity is still alive.
