The Social Situation of the Workforce in Turkey: Unemployment and Social Security

Summary/Abstract: During the past decade Turkey has changed considerably as far as its economic and social structures are concerned. The present analysis reviews whether – and if so, to what degree – the economic development in Turkey actually had an impact on the social situation of the workforce. In this framework the current situation of the labor market with its different components is analyzed in detail. Subsequently some areas of individual as well as collective labor law that exert a prime influence on the social situation are examined. In this context the discussion focuses not only on the legal framework but also turns to implementation and its resulting effects on the Turkish workforce. Finally the social benefits granted in case of unemployment by unemployment insurance are highlighted.
