Summary/Abstract: The first years after Bulgaria s liberation from Turkish rule were a period of intensive state development but also of acute external and internal crises. This biographic outline presents the life of Peter Boyanov who in that period grew to manhood, serve the consolidation of the security of the State and fought for his idea of Bulgaria’s future. Peter Boyanov was born in Sliven on October 29, 1858 (Julian calendar). In 1879 he won an officer’s rank with the first class of graduates of the Military School in Sofia and joined the Militia of the Autonomous Region of Eastern Roumelia, formed after the Treaty of Berlin. Immediately after the unification of the Region with the Principality of Bulgaria in September 1885 he was promoted to the rank of captain and was soon appointed military commandant of the town of Stara Zagora. He was at this post during the abdication of Prince Alexander I of Bulgaria and the coming into office of the Regency headed by St. Stambolov. In the spring of l887, as the result of disagreement with the policy of the new rule, he was removed from the army and joined the active Russophil opposition which fought for the restoration of the previous influence of Russia. An expression of this stand of P. Boyanov was his attempt, together with local people, to raise a revolt in Stara Zagora. and its district with the hope that the movement would spread all over the country. The revolt failed and Boyanov, who moved over to Turkish territory, joined the preparation of an armed, unit with which to return to Bulgaria and try to cause an uprising. Already on the second day (December 24, 1887) after stepping on Bulgarian soil the unit was intercepted by a military force and defeated. Captain Peter Boyanov and its other leader, Russian Captain N. A. Nabokov, were killed.
