Summary/Abstract: Judgements about secularism are based on the attitude of those assessing it towards the place of religion in the public sphere. For opponents of secularism, its appearance is perceived as a threat. For supporters of secularism, it means a departure from an oppressive model for the presence of religion in the life of the individual and represents a desire for institutional forms of religion to withdraw to the private sphere. The purpose the discussion here is not, however, to reflect on the current state of secularization and the recent revival of religion, but rather to identify certain trends in the way religion is perceived, in which both secularism and postsecularism are defined in new and often surprising ways.
