Weddings in Veliko Turnovo District Today

Summary/Abstract: The present-day wedding in Veliko Tarnovo district, as part of the ceremonial of family and the general way of life, does not differ essentially from that prevalent in the whole country. Regardless of the local character of individual actions, the wedding reflects the national, social, class, cultural, genre, folklore and poetical values of society. The structure of the traditional wedding is the basis of the wedding of today. A number of its elements are to be found in present day weddings, such as: the engagement, the ritual loaves of bread, the customs connected with fetching the bride, welcoming the bridal couple, the wedding table, and the symbols: the bride's veil, the wedding rings, the jewellery, the wedding flag, the ceremonial rooster, etc. However, they have given a new content, corresponding to the aesthetic and artistic values of the personality. Elements which no longer correspond to the mental requirements of a man belonging to the socialist society have fallen away from it, such as: the marriage negotiations, the dowry, the trade deals, the public proclamation of the bride's virginity, the orgiac ceremonies around it, etc. A new supreme moment in the wedding of today is the registering of the marriage contract.
