Summary/Abstract: Traditionally, the Church – State relations in the predominantly Orthodox countries were based on the Byzantine principle of symphony: a spiritual one and a political one, which were, however, united by the common social life of the Church believers and of the State citizens. In all its history, the symphony between Church and State was marked by the tension between ideal and insufficiency, between the tradition of continuity and the tendency of renewal. The relation of the Church with the society in general and with the state in particular has to take into account the specific social and historical conditions in which it conducts its activity. One of the biggest problems the Orthodox Churches deals with in the modern world is the understanding of the notion of the Church of God in a pluralist society. The contemporary period demonstrates that the theory of secularization as progressive, irreversible and integral rationality of existence, theory that has supported the cultural universe of modernity, finds itself into a crisis. Because of the democratic pluralist context of the modern societies, the dialogue is the means by which people may convince the others to regard the issues that are influencing their common life.
