Metalingual Indices of Professional Speech in Non-linguistic Texts

Summary/Abstract: This article analysis the usage of various fields terms with metacomments in non-linguistic texts of Modern Lithuanian. The most characteristic are comments with the forms of verba dicendi kalbėti 'speak', sakyti 'say', šnekėti 'alk', tarti 'utter', vadinti 'name', with nouns kalba 'speech', terminas 'term', žodis 'word' and indices of profession with preposition anot 'according to' orpasak 'e. g'.: kaip pasakytų psichologai 'as psychologists say', kaip pedagogai vadina 'as pedagogues name', kalbant optikos terminais 'speaking in terms of optics', anot astronomų 'according to astronomers'. From the collected material it is clear that terms and terminological phrases in medicine, psychology, law, journalism, sociology mostly are used with metacomment. Specialists use terms of their own field commonly in literai meaning, but not specialists (specialists of other field) - in literal and in figurative meaning, i. e. in that case one field subjects are defined in terms of another field.
