Summary/Abstract: After the shock of 9/11 events Ian McEwan writes about inevitable movement to a new mood of exhaustion and despair, about an explosion of each individual death, wrecking the lives of nearest people, about nature of empathy and the mechanics of compassion. The writer stresses on an ancient, human universal, shown us by new technology. He states that among hijackers crimes was a failure of the imagination – if they had been able to imagine themselves into the thoughts and feelings of the passengers, they would have been unable to proceed.
