Summary/Abstract: Sarah Lyall summarizes the reactions when the novelist Ian McEwan has been accused of plagiarism. The Mail printed an article pointing to similarities between several passages in “Atonement” and “No Time for Romance,” the autobiography of the romance novelist Lucilla Andrews. Margaret Atwood, Kazuo Ishiguro, John Updike, Zadie Smith, Martin Amis, Thomas Pynchon, etc. defended McEwan, saying they were intimately familiar with what the writer had done, having done the same thing themselves. The authors cheerfully admit plundering other work – historical writing, autobiography, primary-source documents, other novels – for their own books, and said that such research was the lifeblood of any novel that depended on period detail.
